What is carbon monoxide (CO)?

Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can be produced in a boiler when fuel is not burned completely due to a lack of oxygen. Boilers are designed to expel CO through flues, but blockages or leaks in the system can allow CO to escape into the home.

CO detectors

All properties with appliances that have the potential to produce carbon monoxide (CO), such as gas boilers are installed with CO detectors. You must not move the CO detector that is installed in your property. The detectors will look like the one shown below.

During your annual gas safety check, the Engineer will check the CO detector is working as it should and will produce an alarm record to evidence the alarm is in the property and working as it should.

What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure?

CO is a poisonous gas that you can’t see, hear, smell or taste, but breathing in even a small amount could be deadly. Know the common symptoms to look out for:

Headaches
Nausea
Dizziness
Breathlessness
Collapse
Loss of consciousness
