Replacing front doors in council homes

An update from Colchester Borough Homes — August 2026

We have started our programme to replace more than 200 fire-resistant front doors in homes across
Colchester. The new doors will help keep homes safe and secure.

What you need to know

We are working with Nationwide Contractors to carry out the first phase of the programme.

If your home is included in the programme, CBH or Nationwide will contact you to arrange the surveys needed before we install your new door.

Some homes may need an asbestos survey before a new door can be fitted. If this applies to your home, we will explain what needs to happen and agree a suitable appointment with you.

We will aim to carry out the asbestos survey and door survey during the same visit to reduce
disruption.

The survey is an important part of the process. It allows us to take accurate measurements and collect the information needed to make sure your new door is designed and manufactured correctly.

After the survey, Nationwide Contractors will provide you with an anticipated installation date. This will give you plenty of notice before the work starts.

You will be able to agree a date and time that works for you before your new door is installed.

Allow access for all agreed appointments so we can keep the programme on track.

How we will check the work

CBH will keep a close eye on the programme as the work is carried out. We will check progress, make sure the right information is recorded, and inspect a sample of the work to make sure it meets the expected standard.

Information for leaseholders

If you are a leaseholder and need to replace or upgrade your front door, we may be able to help.

We understand that replacing a front door can be costly and difficult to arrange, so we want to make the process as straightforward as possible.

We will write separately to leaseholders with more information about the offer, how the work can be arranged, and the payment options available.
