On 8 May 2025, Colchester City Council sheltered housing schemes came together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a day of remembrance, celebration, and connection. More than 100 tenants were supported by Colchester Borough Homes Older Persons Services to take part in events designed to capture the spirit of the original 1945 street parties.

 

Sheltered schemes across the city transformed their communal areas to mirror the festive street scenes of VE Day, complete with themed table settings, refreshments, and music. The aim: to spark memories, strengthen community bonds, and honour a day that changed history.

 

Tenants shared their personal recollections of VE Day as children – vivid stories of bunting, dancing, and a sense of hope that swept the country.

 

The day also offered a valuable opportunity for tenants to connect and socialise, supporting wellbeing and reducing isolation. The positive feedback has been overwhelming.
