Free Event Benefits Colchester Landlords

Colchester Landlords are invited to a free event organised by Colchester Borough Homes (CBH) next week, which will feature specialist speakers, expert advice and networking opportunities.

The Colchester Landlord Forum, being held at the Jobserve Community Stadium on Wednesday 16 October 2019, will provide landlords with information and news about legislation, services and schemes which are highly relevant to the Colchester property sector and will help them comply with their responsibilities.

The evening, organised in partnership with the National Landlords Association, runs between 19:00 – 21:00.

The forum, held twice a year, is designed to help landlords make the most of their portfolios while ensuring they provide legal and safe homes and are aware of support available for them and their tenants.

There will be presentations on a range of topics of interest to landlords, these will include:

The Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 – the Act came into force on 20 March 2019. What new responsibilities does the Act place on landlords and how can landlords best protect themselves from claims? What are the penalties for landlords who fail to comply with the new law?

News and Legislative Update – Joanne Dron (NLA Senior Local Representative) will provide her usual entertaining and informative update on all matters of interest to private sector landlords;

Working with the Council / Colchester Borough Homes – we will provide an update on the steps we are taking both to give landlords greater confidence in letting their properties to our clients and to speed-up the letting process.

Extended Q&A Session

The extended Q&A session is set to discuss some recent developments in the private rented sector. For example, last year the government consulted on the need for a Housing Court and earlier this year announced plans to abolish the S21 (no fault) possession procedure (see here for more information – consultation closes on 12 October 2019) – what are the implications for landlords and how can we ensure that the private rented sector remains viable for both landlords and tenants? We hope that this extended Q&A session will provide some useful debate.

The event will also feature further information about ‘HomeStep’, which is being offered by CBH to landlords, offering generous cash incentives and support for landlords and tenants for 12-month tenancies.

Chief Executive of Colchester Borough Homes Gareth Mitchell said: “Our relationships with local landlords are really crucial for us, because they are a fundamental component of our approach in helping people find accommodation.

Events like the Landlords Forum help to strengthen those relationships and give Colchester landlords a chance to stay up to date with legislation, to be clear about their responsibility to provide quality housing and to support their tenants. I would encourage any owners who are currently letting or considering letting their properties to come along.”

Advance booking is essential, and the event is free of charge. To book your place visit Landlord Forum
