Every year, thousands of people apply for social housing through the Gateway to Homechoice register. But with limited housing stock and high demand, many applicants won’t be successful – and temporary accommodation isn’t always what people expect. 

We want to help you make informed decisions about your housing journey. Here are some of the most common myths – and the facts you need to know. 

Myth: “If I join the housing register, I’ll get a council house.” 
Fact: Colchester Borough Homes receives around 2,500 active applications each year. Due to limited availability, most applicants will not be offered social housing. 

Myth: “Temporary accommodation means I’ll have my own space.” 
Fact: Temporary accommodation is limited. You may need to share kitchens or bathrooms with other families and move between different units depending on availability. 

Myth: “Temporary accommodation will be in Colchester.” 
Fact: While we try to keep placements local, some temporary accommodation is outside the borough due to availability. 

Myth: “Once I’m in temporary accommodation, I’ll quickly get a permanent home.” 
Fact: If the council accepts a full homeless duty, you could spend 1 to 5 years in temporary accommodation depending on your needs and the type of property required. 

Myth: “Social housing is the only way to find a stable home.” 
Fact: Many households placed in temporary accommodation eventually move into private rented accommodation, which can offer stability more quickly.
