Colchester Borough Homes (CBH) is pleased to announce central government funding to support Colchester and Tendring Women's Refuge. The grant of £100,000 is part of a wider £10 million government fund that will see women's refuges across the country boost provision for vulnerable victims of domestic violence and their families.

The grant announced on International Women's Day came following a joint bid from Colchester Borough Council and Tendring District Council and saw a total of 148 councils confirmed to receive a share of the funding over the next two years.

Caroline Robinson, Executive Director of Colchester and Tendring Women's Refuge, which is affiliated to National Women's Aid says,

"This news will make a considerable difference for the women and families of North Essex.  Providing a safe and supportive environment for victims of domestic violence is our top priority. We know that a victim of domestic violence will attempt to flee from their perpetrator on average 50 times before they are successful and when they do get to a safe refuge this is the start of a long journey for them.

With this funding in place we can  offer help  to more women who need refuge and continue to put in place systems of support such as counselling, advice on healthy relationships and help with training and employment for those that come to us for help.  Since April 2014, we have not been able to accommodate 123 women because we were full. The figures indicate that there is still a substantial need for refuge and this grant will go some way in helping us to meet that need. "

This funding forms part of a number of measures that the government is putting into action to ensure councils can adequately support women at risk of domestic violence, including investing in helping vulnerable people through housing support and preventing and tackling homelessness and rough sleeping., including investing in helping vulnerable people through housing support and preventing and tackling homelessness and rough sleeping.
